Following the well-received comeback of “Personal,” Nadine Lustre takes her sound in a more urban direction with “Donuts,” a sleek pop, hip-hop, and R&B collaboration with Black Eyed Peas member Apl.de.Ap, released under Cool Girl Records.
Narrated by the commanding voice of The Dawn’s Francis Brew and layered with haunting choir vocals, the track unfolds into a gritty soundscape driven by 808s, marching drums, clever lyricism, and retro-futurist production.
“Donuts” moves away from the polished pop sheen of “Personal” while retaining the attitude and candor that have shaped Nadine’s music. Her rap-sung delivery gives the track a suave edge, highlighting a bolder side of the multi-hyphenate artist.
Apl.de.Ap adds another dimension with an energetic Taglish verse that reflects both his global career and Filipino roots. The Pampanga-born rapper references Datu Lapu-Lapu of Mactan while delivering a message about taking control of one’s destiny.
Written by Nadine Lustre, Andric Ivo Empreso, and Jan Roberts Baloloy, “Donuts” was produced by Khalil Atienza, Elijiah Wudz Bitacura, and Isagani Palabyab. The anthemic track serves as the second release in a series of singles that hints at a larger project from the actress, businesswoman, and pop star.
Nadine previously shared her excitement about the collaboration in an Instagram post on September 5, writing, “A little surreal making music with a legend, @apldeap.”
“Donuts” is now available worldwide on all major digital music platforms via Cool Girl Records.
