As the Philippines transitions into an aging society, Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa and Sanofi Philippines are encouraging Filipinos to prioritize cardiovascular health through regular check-ups, early intervention, and recommended vaccinations.

The message took center stage at “Bawat Tibok, Protektado,” a community health activation held at Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa in Nuvali, Laguna. The initiative brought together health experts to discuss heart health and the role of vaccination in protecting older adults and individuals at risk of or living with cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Dr. Danielle Louis Villanueva, cardiologist, Board Director of the Philippine Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society, and Vice President of the Philippine Heart Association – Southern Tagalog Chapter, explained that influenza can increase the risk of hospitalization and serious complications among people with CVD. Adults aged 40 and above face a 10-fold increased risk of heart attack within three days of contracting influenza, she noted.

The need for preventive care is underscored by the country’s changing demographics. In 2024, approximately 11.42 million Filipinos aged 60 and above accounted for 10.2% of the household population. CVD affects about one in six Filipinos, while ischemic heart disease was the country’s leading cause of death in 2025.

Early Detection And Everyday Support

Dr. Justin Lopez, Health and Wellness Hub Clinic Manager at Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa, emphasized the importance of regular medical consultations, health screenings, timely vaccination, and early detection to help people manage health risks as they age.

Vanessa Gomez, Head of Vaccines at Sanofi Philippines, highlighted how community health education can help Filipinos better understand their health risks and make informed decisions about available preventive measures.

Beyond clinical care, families and caregivers also play a vital role in supporting older adults. Dr. Mae Claudine Gonzales, Associate Director for Ancillary Services at Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa, encouraged families to help manage medications and appointments and recognize changes in an older adult’s condition as early as possible.

Bringing Preventive Care Closer To Home

For older adults who experience mobility challenges or difficulty traveling to clinics, convenient access to healthcare is especially important. Through its Healthway Express program and dedicated home care team, Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa brings consultations and vaccinations directly to patients’ homes.

The service reflects Healthway’s Care Beyond Cure mission and supports its continuing partnership with Sanofi Philippines to bring practical health information closer to communities and improve access to preventive services.

Through initiatives like “Bawat Tibok, Protektado,” both organizations aim to strengthen awareness of heart health and encourage Filipinos to take proactive steps toward healthier aging.
