Canva today unveiled Magic Layers, a breakthrough technology that transforms any flat design or image into fully editable layers, giving creators unprecedented control over AI-generated and static content.
Generative AI has accelerated content creation, but most outputs remain locked in static files, forcing users to restart designs to make even minor edits. Magic Layers changes this by turning flat images into structured, editable layers within the Canva editor, preserving layout, text, and element relationships while allowing creators to refine, reshape, and remix their work.
How Magic Layers Works
-
Upload an image: Canva automatically separates elements into individual, movable objects, preserves layout relationships, and keeps text live and editable.
-
Generate a design with Canva AI: Go from prompt to editable design within moments, creating presentations, social posts, documents, and more—all ready to move, swap, or adjust inside Canva.
Currently in public beta for single-page .png and .jpg files in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, Magic Layers’ capabilities will expand in future updates.
Behind the Technology
Unlike traditional vector tools that trace shapes without understanding design context, Magic Layers interprets the structure of an image as a whole. It identifies element relationships, restores text as live boxes, and separates components while preserving the original layout, providing true creative flexibility without starting over.
Cameron Adams, Canva co-founder and Chief Product Officer, said, “There’s been an explosion of AI-generated content that has, until now, been a dead end. Generation is just the beginning—real creative freedom comes from being able to edit without losing momentum.”
Powered by Canva Design Model
Magic Layers is part of the Canva Design Model, the company’s proprietary foundational AI model that has already powered millions of editable presentations, documents, and social posts, as well as integrations with ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot.
Magic Layers begins rolling out in public beta today, with wider global availability planned.
