For nearly 11 years, Rodelyn Serna has carried the familiar heartache of many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs): missing the people she loves in the hope of giving them a better future.
Working as a domestic helper in Malaysia, she spent more than a decade helping raise someone else’s child while watching her own daughters grow up from afar. She missed school activities, milestones, and the everyday moments that can never be brought back. Yet through every sacrifice, she held on to the promise she made when she first left home: her children would have opportunities she never had.
Before moving abroad, Rodelyn worked as a private school teacher in Mindoro, while her husband earned a living in the farm by drying palay. Despite their efforts, their combined income was barely enough to cover the family’s needs. She recalls giving her children just enough allowance for school while carefully stretching every peso for daily expenses and their dream of owning a home.
Determined to change their circumstances, she made the difficult decision to work overseas.
“Sabi ko, hindi puwedeng mamuhay ang mga anak ko sa ganitong sitwasyon. Ayoko yung pagdating ng panahon, sisihin ako ng mga bata na ‘inanak mo pa kami, tapos ganito lang yung buhay na ipararanas mo sa amin.’ Kaya yan, nagsumikap po ako na mag-abroad,” she shared.
Like many first-time OFWs, Rodelyn arrived in a foreign country carrying both hope and fear. The homesickness was overwhelming, especially during her first few days in Malaysia.
“Wala pong gabi na hindi ako umiiyak. Ila-lock ko lang yung pinto at bintana para hindi nila marinig na umaatungal talaga ako sa super iyak, super homesick po talaga,” she recalled.
Eventually, she learned to live with the loneliness. Whenever the longing for home became too much, she reminded herself why she had left in the first place.
Finding Strength Through Years of Challenges
As the years passed, the challenges continued. Rodelyn faced family problems, financial pressures, and difficult personal trials. Many of her brief trips home were not for celebrations but for emergencies. Whenever she returned to the Philippines, there was often a loved one who needed care, a crisis to resolve, or another responsibility waiting for her.
“Tuwing uwi ako lagi may emergency,” she recalled. “Wala pang happy moments.”
There were times when she wondered when life would finally give her a reason to simply be happy. Still, giving up was never an option. Her faith, family, and love became her reasons to keep going.
“As long as there is love in your heart, you can bear everything,” she said.
An Unexpected Surprise Through Love Knows No Distance
Amid the routine of work and sacrifice came an unexpected opportunity.
While scrolling through social media, Rodelyn discovered the Love Knows No Distance campaign, an initiative made possible through SM Cinema’s partnership with PLDT Global via Ramdam, its newest digital ad platform, and TinBo, its digital marketplace for overseas Filipinos.
The campaign invited Filipinos abroad to share heartfelt messages for their loved ones back home, celebrating the connections that remain strong despite geographical distance.
At first, Rodelyn was hesitant to join.
“Sabi ko, totoo kaya ito? Imposible naman na may magbibigay ng roundtrip ticket,” she shared.
Still, she decided to fill out the entry form and submit a message for her family, never expecting anything in return. Weeks later, she received a notification that left her stunned: she had won two roundtrip tickets, allowing family members from the Philippines to visit her in Malaysia.
Having experienced online scams before, she initially struggled to believe the news.
“Totoo ba ito?” she remembered thinking.
But as the reality sank in, disbelief turned into overwhelming happiness. For the first time in a long while, she found herself crying tears of joy.
“Sa 11 years ng stress, nakaranas ako ng saya,” she said.
A Reunion Worth More Than a Ticket
The prize may come in the form of airline tickets, but for Rodelyn, its value goes far beyond travel. It means finally having the opportunity to spend meaningful time with her daughters, Stephanie and Daniela, without the usual worries, emergencies, and responsibilities that have often defined her visits home.
The reunion also highlights the purpose of platforms like TinBo, which serves as a digital bridge for overseas Filipinos to stay connected with their families through services, e-vouchers, and other support tools.
For Rodelyn, that connection has become especially meaningful.
“I’m very thankful to TinBo, sa PLDT Global, and sa SM Cinema,” she said.
After years of communicating through calls, messages, and brief visits, she is looking forward to sharing uninterrupted moments with her daughters.
“Makakasama ko kayo,” she said, expressing her excitement for their reunion. “Gusto ko kayo ilibot dito.”
For an OFW whose story has long been defined by endurance and sacrifice, the tickets represent more than a trip to Malaysia. They offer a long-awaited chance to make new memories with the people who have always been her reason for moving forward—and a reminder that even after the longest storms, joy can still find its way home.
