Synology has launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), the latest software update for its ActiveProtect data protection appliances, introducing broader platform coverage, cross-platform recovery, and stronger security features for hybrid IT environments.

The update is designed to help organizations simplify backup infrastructure by bringing data protection and management into a centralized, scalable solution.

“Managing fragmented backup infrastructure drives up costs and slows recovery,” said Jia-Yu Liu, Executive Vice President of the Synology Data Protection Group. “APM 2.0 builds on that value, enabling organizations to safeguard their entire hybrid infrastructure through one centralized, scalable solution.”

Broader Coverage And Faster Recovery

APM 2.0 expands protection to Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. Its cross-platform recovery capabilities allow workloads to be backed up and restored across different environments, supporting disaster recovery as well as workload migration.

The update also expands backup destination options. ActiveProtect Vault now supports more Synology NAS models, while Azure Blob Storage joins the supported copy and tiering targets.

Backups stored in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can also be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM, allowing organizations to use cloud environments for disaster recovery without routing data through on-premises hardware.

AI-Powered Protection On The Way

APM 2.0 introduces software-based volume-level storage encryption, helping protect data at rest if drives are stolen or hardware is lost.

The upcoming APM 2.1 update will add AI/ML-powered anomaly detection that monitors backup versions for unusual changes, including shifts in change rates, file modifications, mass deletions, and entropy. Suspicious backup copies can be quarantined for investigation, while the system learns from administrator decisions to improve detection accuracy.

APM 2.1 will also scan backups for malware before restoration using integrated antivirus solutions such as Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET. If malware is detected in the latest backup, Auto Fallback can restore the most recent clean version instead.

ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 is now available at no additional cost for all DP-Series appliances.
