Philippine businesses have access to more data than ever, but growing economic pressures, geopolitical shifts, technological changes, and recurring disruptions are making business decisions increasingly complex. For leaders, the challenge is no longer simply gathering information—it is knowing what to trust, understanding it in context, and using it to make sound decisions.

“Simply having more data isn’t the answer. What matters is having the right data, with enough depth, breadth, and context to see the whole picture. Because when the picture is incomplete, then the decision will also be incomplete,” said Pia Arellano, President and CEO of CIBI Information Inc.

The need for reliable information is particularly important in high-stakes decisions involving investments, business partnerships, hiring, and artificial intelligence (AI). As organizations manage increasingly fragmented systems and interconnected risks, leaders must consider how decisions in one area can affect the broader business.

Former Trade Secretary and BSP Monetary Board Member Peter Favila emphasized that resilience goes beyond surviving disruptions. It also involves the ability to adapt, make sound decisions, and move forward despite uncertainty.

The growing use of AI further raises the stakes. While AI can process information, identify patterns, and accelerate decisions, it does not eliminate the need for human judgment and accountability.

“Technology without sound judgment can amplify our mistakes just as easily as it can amplify our capabilities,” said Rene Buenaventura, President of Pin An Holdings Corporation and Cliveden Management Corporation.

Francis Estrada, Chairman of CIBI, likewise stressed the importance of human oversight, noting that algorithms can process data and systems can flag risks, but leaders remain responsible for deciding how to respond.

Ultimately, businesses may need to view trusted information as a form of economic infrastructure. Organizations that can identify credible information, understand the bigger picture, and combine technology with sound judgment will be better positioned to navigate uncertainty and pursue sustainable growth.
