The road to better health doesn’t always require big, dramatic changes—sometimes, it begins in the gut. According to Dr. Vipada Sae-Lao, Nutrition Education & Training Lead for Asia Pacific at Herbalife, nurturing gut health can start with small, consistent steps rooted in traditional Asian eating habits.

However, modern lifestyles and dietary shifts—like swapping rice bowls for fast food—have led to an increase in digestive issues such as bloating, reflux, and poor nutrient absorption. In the Philippines, rising fast-food consumption and poor dietary habits have also contributed to malnutrition and obesity among working adults, affecting both health and productivity.

“The goal is not to alarm, but to remind everyone to pause and reflect on what the body truly needs,” said Dr. Sae-Lao.

The gut, often called the second brain, plays a crucial role in digestion, immunity, energy levels, and mood. But processed foods and refined sugars can disrupt its natural balance, leading to inflammation and long-term health risks. The key, says Dr. Sae-Lao, lies in returning to balanced, nutrient-rich meals and mindful eating.

Traditional Asian diets—rich in vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fermented foods—naturally support gut health. Dishes like Tinola and Pinakbet not only celebrate Filipino flavors but also nourish the gut with fiber, herbs, and nutrients. Practicing mindful eating—chewing slowly, savoring meals, and avoiding distractions—further aids digestion.

Dr. Sae-Lao emphasizes blending traditional food wisdom with modern routines: planning meals ahead, staying hydrated, moving regularly, and prioritizing quality sleep.

“Start small. Swap one meal, slow down for one bite, tune in to what feels good. Your gut can lead the way—just listen closely,” she concludes.
