A sore or itchy throat, sneezing, headache, body aches, and that familiar feeling of being under the weather can quickly turn into a common cold. Along with a runny nose, nasal congestion can make the head feel heavy and breathing more difficult.

According to Dr. Paulo Angelo D.C. Catindig, an otorhinolaryngologist at Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), a blocked nose is not simply caused by excess mucus. It is part of the body’s immune response to a cold virus. As the immune system fights the infection, blood vessels in the nasal passages become inflamed and swollen, narrowing the airways and making it harder for air and mucus to pass through.

A common cold typically lasts around seven to 10 days, but several measures can provide temporary relief from congestion.

Simple Ways To Breathe More Comfortably

Nonprescription decongestants in pill, syrup, or nasal spray forms can help reduce swelling in the nasal passages. Ingredients such as phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine may be used, but these should be taken only according to package directions or a doctor’s advice.

Nasal inhalers containing ingredients such as camphor, menthol, and herbs can provide a cooling sensation and temporary relief from stuffiness, although they do not actually clear the congestion.

Steam inhalation may also help loosen thick mucus. However, care should be taken when handling boiling water to avoid burns.

Food and drinks can provide comfort, too. Hot soups, broths, and tea can soothe a sore throat, while the warmth and steam may temporarily ease congestion. Peppermint and ginger teas may also be comforting choices.

Most importantly, getting adequate rest gives the body time to recover. If cold symptoms do not improve after 10 days, or if they are accompanied by fever, persistent sore throat, ear pain, or difficulty breathing, consult a doctor.
