Nicanor Reyes Street—named after the founder of Far Eastern University (FEU)—has officially been declared a “School Zone” by the City of Manila, marking a significant milestone in strengthening safety and security within the university’s vicinity.

“This is a significant milestone in our continuous and untiring pursuit of improving the safety and security at FEU, specifically along Nicanor Reyes Street,” said Edward R. Kilakiga, FEU’s Vice President for Facilities and Technical Services, who affirmed that the university will continue working closely with the Manila city government for the initiative’s full implementation.

Ordinance No. 9132, authored by Councilor Louisa Marie J. Quintos-Tan and co-authored by Councilor Raymundo R. Yupangco, covers the stretch of both lanes along Nicanor Reyes Street in Sampaloc. The ordinance mandates the installation of safety measures such as the placement of “School Zone,” “Slow Down,” and “Adhere to Speed Limit” signs, as well as adjustments to pedestrian crossing times to better accommodate students and faculty.

“By designating Nicanor Reyes Street as a school zone, it will most likely enhance pedestrian safety, especially for students, by reducing the likelihood and severity of accidents in this high foot-traffic area,” said Councilor Quintos-Tan.

Monitoring and enforcement of the ordinance will be led by the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) and the Department of Engineering, in coordination with Far Eastern University.
