Montblanc pays tribute to Bruce Lee’s enduring influence with the Great Characters Homage to Bruce Lee collection, featuring four writing instruments inspired by the legendary martial artist’s cinematic achievements, philosophical teachings, and cultural impact. Through distinctive designs and intricate craftsmanship, the collection celebrates a figure whose influence continues to transcend generations and connect Eastern and Western cultures.
Part of Montblanc’s Great Characters collector line, the collection explores different dimensions of Lee’s life, from his groundbreaking film career to his martial arts philosophy and belief in authenticity, adaptability, and continuous self-development.
Bruce Lee: Fighter, Icon, And Philosopher
Born in San Francisco in 1940 and raised in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee bridged cultures throughout his life. While studying philosophy at the University of Washington, he taught martial arts and challenged convention by sharing traditional Chinese practices beyond the Chinese community. His belief in adaptability and openness eventually shaped Jeet Kune Do, his distinctive approach to martial arts.
Through films such as The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, The Way of the Dragon, and Enter the Dragon, Lee introduced audiences worldwide to his remarkable speed, precision, and screen presence. Although he died unexpectedly at just 32, his legacy extends beyond physical mastery to include self-discipline, curiosity, and the courage to remain true to oneself.
Special Edition: The Actor
The Montblanc Great Characters Homage to Bruce Lee Special Edition celebrates Lee’s achievements on screen through a combination of black and yellow precious resin. The black barrel features a dragon motif inspired by a drawing Lee created during the filming of Enter the Dragon, while the yellow cap references his iconic jumpsuit in the pagoda sequence of Game of Death. Geometric lines inspired by the original Enter the Dragon film poster complete the design.
Other details pay homage to defining moments in Lee’s career and philosophy. A ruthenium-coated cone bears a circling hornet inspired by The Green Hornet, the television series that helped introduce him to international audiences. The textured clip resembles a nunchaku stick, while the cap ring evokes bamboo, symbolizing flexibility. The cap top features the Chinese character for “little dragon” within the Montblanc emblem, and the handcrafted ruthenium-coated solid Au 585 gold nib carries the yin and yang symbol, representing the balance of opposing forces.
Limited Edition 1940: The Filmmaker And Creative Visionary
Limited to 1,940 pieces, commemorating Lee’s birth year, the Limited Edition 1940 celebrates his work as an actor, director, and pioneer of the martial arts film genre.
Its gold-coated cap and barrel feature yellow lacquer accented by two black stripes inspired by Lee’s Game of Death costume. The color yellow also reflects its associations with enlightenment, knowledge, and harmony in Chinese culture.
A fragmented dragon motif, adapted from Lee’s original drawing, stretches across the cap and barrel, recalling the mirrored-room sequence in Enter the Dragon, where illusions are shattered to reveal the truth. The matte gold-coated cone features a pattern reminiscent of a film camera adjustment ring, while the gold-coated clip and cap ring reference a nunchaku stick and bamboo cane. A mother-of-pearl Montblanc emblem incorporates the Chinese character for “little dragon,” and the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is engraved with the yin and yang symbol.
Limited Edition 93: The Martial Artist
With only 93 pieces available, the Limited Edition 93 honors Lee’s mastery of martial arts and the development of his philosophy of movement.
The cap and barrel are decorated by hand using traditional Japanese maki-e and urushi lacquer techniques. The swirling composition references a reaction-training shield used by Lee, with layers of lacquer and colored powder carefully applied, smoothed, sanded, and polished to create a distinctive finish.
The red lacquered cone features the name stamp of the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute, which Lee founded in Seattle as he moved beyond rigid traditional systems toward the adaptable principles that would become Jeet Kune Do. A black PVD-coated solid Au 750 gold ring evokes the canvas of a punching bag, while a cedar wood inlay references the white cedar columns of the University of Washington, where Lee studied philosophy.
The gold-coated clip and solid gold cap ring echo the forms of a nunchaku stick and bamboo. On the cap top, the Chinese character for “little dragon” is rendered in maki-e on the Montblanc emblem. The handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib features Lee’s Jeet Kune Do symbol: yin and yang encircled by arrows, representing the constant interaction of opposing forces.
Limited Edition 8: The Artist Of Life
The collection culminates in the Limited Edition 8, an edition of just eight pieces celebrating Lee as an artist of life whose physical discipline, philosophical insight, and creative independence were inseparable.
A dragon based on Lee’s own sketch winds around the solid Au 750 signature gold cap and barrel, with its scales individually inlaid by hand with oak and bamboo. The materials reflect one of Lee’s guiding principles: “The rigid oak breaks in a storm, while the flexible bamboo bends with the wind.”
Beneath the dragon, a hand-created texture evokes the movement of water and Lee’s philosophy of remaining formless and adaptable. The hand-lacquered cone recalls the tortoiseshell appearance of the spectacles he wore during less prosperous periods of his life. A gold-coated clip, finished with hand-applied lacquer, takes the shape of a nunchaku stick, while the cap ring references bamboo.
The Montblanc emblem, set into red lacquer, interprets the yin and yang symbol through carefully selected yellow sapphires and red garnets. Completing the design, the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is embossed with “Walk On,” the words Lee used as an inner anchor during his recovery from a severe back injury. A brilliant-cut diamond, set by hand, adds a final detail.
