While vaccinations are often associated with children, medical experts emphasize that adults—especially those aged 50 and above—need them just as much, as the immune system naturally weakens with age.
“Vaccines were created to help you build resistance against illnesses that could land you in the hospital, render you disabled, or threaten your life,” said Dr. Ryan Raymond Y. Bautista of Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). He explained that aging, along with conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and HIV, can reduce immune defenses, making vaccination an important layer of protection not only for individuals but also for the community.
MakatiMed highlights five key vaccines recommended for older adults:
1. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine
Recommended annually, especially for seniors and immunocompromised individuals. In the Philippines, flu season typically runs from June to November. While flu may resolve within a week, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia and worsen existing conditions like asthma and heart disease.
2. RSV Vaccine
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can resemble a common cold but may cause serious respiratory complications. It is recommended as a single dose for at-risk adults aged 50–74 and seniors 75 and above.
3. Pneumococcal Vaccine
Protects against pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. MakatiMed recommends PCV and PPSV23 vaccines for adults 50 and above, depending on health status and risk factors.
4. Shingles Vaccine
Given in two doses, this vaccine helps protect against the varicella-zoster virus, significantly reducing the risk and severity of shingles, especially in older adults.
5. Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
A booster shot recommended every 10 years, offering protection against three serious diseases that can affect the nervous system, respiratory system, and overall health.
Dr. Bautista emphasized that these vaccines are essential tools for healthy aging and long-term protection, especially for vulnerable populations.
