Fastly, Inc., a leading global edge cloud platform, has joined DIMPACT, a coalition of organizations working to develop science-based solutions that reduce the environmental impact of delivering digital media.

The company becomes the first edge cloud platform provider to participate in the initiative, contributing its expertise in edge networking, emissions measurement, and infrastructure to help media companies better understand and reduce the carbon footprint of their digital services.

Supporting a more sustainable internet

By joining DIMPACT, Fastly aims to provide real-world data on how content is delivered across the internet, helping streaming platforms, publishers, and other digital media organizations make more informed decisions about sustainability.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Fastly to the DIMPACT initiative. Their participation strengthens DIMPACT’s ability to advance a more accurate, data-driven approach to measuring and reducing digital emissions,” said Jason Bell, Director at SLR Consulting and Executive Sponsor of DIMPACT.

“Accurately calculating digital emissions requires a deep understanding of every hop data takes from the origin to the end-user device. Fastly’s expertise at the edge fills a crucial piece of the puzzle, moving the industry closer to a transparent, standardized blueprint for digital decarbonization.”

Addressing digital carbon footprints

As online media consumption continues to grow, organizations are placing greater focus on reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions—the indirect emissions generated throughout a company’s value chain.

DIMPACT supports this effort by providing trusted data, research, and practical tools that help organizations measure and reduce the environmental impact of delivering digital content while encouraging collaboration across the industry.

Fastly said its participation comes at a time when increasing internet usage and the rise of AI-generated traffic are making digital sustainability more important than ever.

“As digital content, including AI-generated traffic, continues to reshape the internet, we want to empower the digital media sector with the granular data and actionable insights needed for companies to understand and optimize their digital footprints,” said Eoghan Kelly, who leads Sustainability at Fastly.

“We are committed to industry-wide collaboration to ensure the internet of the future is not just faster and more secure, but also more sustainable.”

Driving collaboration across the industry

Fastly said it looks forward to working with other DIMPACT members to support efforts aimed at decarbonizing digital content distribution and establishing consistent standards for emissions reporting across the sector.

Facilitated by SLR Consulting, DIMPACT brings together businesses, researchers, and policymakers to share best practices and accelerate initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of digital media.
