“Emergency” previews band’s comeback EP and reunion concert
After more than two decades away from releasing new music, Filipino alternative rock band Barbie’s Cradle has returned with “Emergency,” its first single since 2003.
Released under Sony Music Entertainment, the indie pop track was written by guitarist Kakoy Legaspi and produced by Barbie Almalbis together with the band. The song tackles existential anxiety with humor, offering a sarcastic take on life’s uncertainties rather than straightforward answers.
“It’s a sarcastic take on existential crisis,” Legaspi said. “It’s about trying to make sense of life’s absurdity by simply becoming more ‘zen’ about it—and about ourselves.”
Rediscovered after years on the shelf
“Emergency” originated in the mid-2000s but remained unreleased for years before the band rediscovered it during the pandemic.
Legaspi said the idea for the song came after noticing a list of emergency contact numbers posted on a wall.
“I came up with the idea of the lyrics when I found myself staring at a piece of paper on the wall that had ’emergency numbers’ written on it,” he recalled.
He added that Almalbis helped reshape the arrangement by splitting the verses into a rapid-fire vocal exchange.
“Barbie came up with the ingenious idea of cutting up the verses in a very fast, jarring way, like a duet but with no spaces in between. It made the song flow way better and gave it a unique twist.”
The band refined the song remotely between 2021 and 2022 before recording it live at Almalbis’ home studio after pandemic restrictions eased. Additional vocal overdubs followed, while engineer Angee Rozul handled the final mix.
New music and reunion concert
“Emergency” marks the beginning of Barbie’s Cradle’s comeback, with more singles scheduled for release in the coming weeks ahead of a new EP.
The band consists of:
- Barbie Almalbis – vocals and guitar
- Kakoy Legaspi – guitar
- Rommel dela Cruz – bass
- Wendell Garcia – drums
Almalbis said the upcoming releases reflect both the band’s past and present.
“We’re excited to revisit the greatest hits and misses while also sharing new songs that reflect where we are now in our lives, both as musicians and human beings. This new body of work is more collaborative and intentional than ever.”
Widely regarded as one of the defining Filipino alternative bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Barbie’s Cradle is known for albums including Barbie’s Cradle, Music from the Buffet Table, and Playing in the Fields.
The band’s return will culminate in a one-night-only reunion concert on August 1, 2026, at the Music Museum, where balcony and orchestra tickets are nearly sold out.
“Emergency” is now available on major digital streaming platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
