MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Medical Wellness Association (MWA) has declared 2026 as “The Year of the Sardine,” highlighting sardines as an affordable, nutrient-dense food that supports metabolic health and overall wellness.
“Metabolic health is key to preventing diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers,” said Dr. Christopher Breuleux, MWA President. Board member James Michael Laffety added, “Sardines are packed with protein, Omega-3s, and essential vitamins and minerals, making them a cost-effective superfood. Declaring 2026 as the Year of the Sardine gives consumers a simple, actionable step toward better health.”
Sardines have been gaining attention globally, with trends like the “3-day sardine fast” and features on wellness podcasts. MWA forecasts global sardine consumption growth exceeding 10% annually from 2026, fueled by rising awareness and updated nutrition guidelines.
In 2025, MWA awarded its prestigious “Superfood” seal to Mega Sardines, a Filipino brand recognized for its fresh, sustainably sourced sardines. Mega Prime Foods, Inc., a 50-year-old company rooted in the Filipino value of Malasakit—selfless service to society—has used this recognition to promote education and awareness worldwide. CEO Michelle Tiu Lim Chan said, “Being the sole brand to earn the MWA Superfood seal reflects our 50-year commitment to providing high-quality, health-promoting foods, and we are proud to continue this mission for decades to come.”
