Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, surrounded by adults and communities that help them feel protected, supported, and empowered to reach their potential. Yet for many children in the Philippines, challenges such as poverty, poor nutrition, and limited access to essential services can make that difficult.

A 2024 Philippine Statistics Authority study estimated that around 509,000 children aged 5 to 17 were engaged in child labor. Meanwhile, UNICEF reported that 23.6% of children under five were stunted in 2023, highlighting how health, nutrition, and socioeconomic challenges can intersect with children’s overall well-being and development.

According to World Vision Philippines National Director Dr. Herbert Carpio, risks to children are not always immediately visible. Vulnerabilities can develop within households struggling to cope, communities with limited services, and systems that may not adequately reach those most in need.

Strengthening Protection From The Ground Up

Challenges involving health, nutrition, education, and household resources can sometimes contribute to broader protection concerns, including school absenteeism, neglect, child labor, teenage pregnancy, and delayed development.

For World Vision Philippines, addressing these concerns means strengthening protective environments before risks escalate. This includes supporting caregivers with practical knowledge on health, nutrition, positive parenting, and child rights, while helping communities recognize risks and strengthen local protection mechanisms.

“At World Vision, child protection begins at the family and community level,” said Dr. Carpio. “This includes supporting caregivers with practical knowledge, strengthening community-based protection mechanisms, and ensuring that children are seen, heard, and supported within their communities.”

World Vision also works to strengthen coordination among child protection, health, education, and livelihood stakeholders at the grassroots level. By encouraging these systems to work together, communities can identify risks earlier, respond appropriately, and support families before situations become more difficult.

Making Child Protection A Shared Commitment

World Vision Philippines continues to call for stronger partnerships among government agencies, civil society organizations, faith groups, and communities to help make child protection a lasting and shared responsibility.
