Eighty years after its founding, Wesleyan University-Philippines in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, is taking a major step forward in technology education through a renewed partnership with Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP).
Now in Phase 5, SWEEP focuses on artificial intelligence, automation, and intelligent systems, introducing students to industry-relevant skills such as prompt engineering, AI-assisted coding, data analysis, generative tools, and automated decision systems. The program also exposes students to extended reality (XR) and metaverse concepts, preparing them for the future of digital interaction.
“Smart supports the development of industry-ready engineers and technopreneurs who can contribute to the country’s digital transformation,” said Stephanie Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Smart.
Phase 5 emphasizes responsible AI use, critical thinking, and problem-solving, ensuring technology complements human judgment. Students also gain mentorship from Smart engineers, learning practical applications in system monitoring, customer support workflows, and preventive maintenance.
Smart has also hosted an ‘AI for All’ bootcamp for Wesleyan educators, equipping teachers with AI-powered tools to create dynamic lessons and automate administrative tasks.
Since joining SWEEP in 2003, Wesleyan University-Philippines has been a trailblazer in engineering education, helping train over 43,000 students and faculty, facilitating 4,000+ internships within the PLDT Group, supporting six startups, and contributing graduates to Smart’s workforce.
SWEEP continues to build industry-ready talent and shape the country’s digital future through cutting-edge education and mentorship.
