International travelers can now stay connected more conveniently as Rakuten Viber introduces its new in-app travel eSIM service, initially launching in the Philippines. The feature allows users to purchase data-only roaming packages for international trips directly through the Viber app, eliminating the need to buy or swap physical SIM cards.
Powered by Rakuten Mobile’s AI-enabled, cloud-native eSIM platform, the service offers travel data plans covering hundreds of destinations. With eSIM technology increasingly supported by modern smartphones, travelers can select and activate connectivity plans digitally and switch carriers without handling a physical SIM.
Activating the Viber eSIM is designed to be straightforward. Users can access the eSIM store through the More or Calls section of the app, select a suitable travel data plan, and complete their purchase using integrated payment methods. They can then install the eSIM through a Quick Install link, QR code, or manual setup before activating the plan and connecting abroad.
The launch forms part of Viber’s broader ambition to evolve into a super app, bringing essential services together in a single platform. Alongside its messaging features, Viber already offers services such as Viber Out for affordable international calls, as well as Business Accounts, Viber Dating, and Viber Pay.
“Bringing eSIM to Viber is a major milestone,” said Nadav Melnick, CPO at Rakuten Viber. He added that the service supports Viber’s evolution from a messaging platform into an everyday utility that makes international travel simpler and more affordable.
Tarek Zeid, SVP of International Wholesale Business at Rakuten Mobile, said the partnership demonstrates how mobile connectivity can be integrated into digital platforms, helping make international connectivity more accessible to travelers.
The collaboration also highlights opportunities for businesses in the travel, fintech, and telecommunications sectors to integrate connectivity into digital experiences and develop new travel-focused services without operating traditional telecom infrastructure.
With the new eSIM feature, Viber users in the Philippines can now manage their international connectivity directly within the app, offering a more seamless way to stay connected while traveling.
