FWD Life Insurance Corporation (FWD) has launched a new insurance plan called The One, specifically for pet lovers in the Philippines. This initiative not only aims to protect the policyholders but also supports animal welfare in collaboration with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). With 68% of Filipino households owning pets as of 2024, indicating that around seven out of ten families have a dog or cat, the plan caters to a growing recognition of pets as family members. This trend reflects the strong empathy Filipinos have for animals, including those in shelters or abandoned, thus making animal welfare a collective concern.

According to PAWS, over 13 million dogs are strays and struggling, which is more than half of the country’s estimated 23.29 million dog population. At the same time, the pet food market is also expected to show significant growth in 2025, estimated at $ 348.5 million USD. This stark contrast between the thriving pet care industry and the plight of stray animals underscores both the deep affection Filipinos have for their pets and the gap that needs to be addressed in terms of caring for the overall well-being of those left behind.

Studies show that the bond between humans and pets mirrors that of parents and children, extending far beyond mere companionship. In fact, 98% of pet owners worldwide report experiencing health benefits, including increased happiness, reduced loneliness, and lower stress levels.

Pets form deep emotional connections with their humans, instinctively wanting them to stay safe and healthy. FWD champions this bond by encouraging pet owners to protect themselves through The One for pet lovers—a one-year life insurance plan with customizable benefits for accidental death and/or critical illness. Beyond self-protection, every policy serves a purpose, as a donation is made to support PAWS programs in medical care, animal rehabilitation center operations, and efforts against animal cruelty — protecting both people and animals.

“As the insurer of the next generation, we believe that protection today goes beyond financial security—it’s about safeguarding the vulnerable and nurturing the values that shape a more compassionate society,” said Gavin Lai, Chief Marketing & Digital Commerce Officer at FWD. “By supporting animal welfare, an advocacy close to the hearts of Filipinos, we empower policyholders to take part in nation-building through collective action. Caring for animals reflects our commitment to protecting all lives while enabling everyone to build their best future.”

The impact of The One for pet lovers extends beyond individual policyholders, as it creates a community that is protected and whose collective compassion can save countless lives.

Every rescued animal tells a story of second chances,” said Atty. Anna Cabrera, PAWS Executive Director. “Through FWD’s support, our work continues—providing medical care, rehabilitating abused animals, and advocating for animal protection laws. Each policy purchased under The One for pet lovers brings us closer to our vision.”
