Fastly, Inc. has introduced new capabilities designed to give organizations greater visibility and control over how artificial intelligence is used across their businesses. The company’s latest AI Runtime Control, AI Firewall, and API Security capabilities expand its Fastly for AI portfolio, bringing AI governance, application protection, and agent security together on its programmable edge cloud platform.

The launch comes as businesses move AI from experimentation into production, creating new challenges around model access, spending, security, agent authorization, and service reliability. Fastly says machine-generated traffic accounted for more than half of its network traffic in July and August, while AI traffic grew 6.5 times faster than human traffic from January through May.

Three Layers Of AI Control

AI Runtime Control is designed to help organizations manage how applications access AI models. It routes model requests through a single endpoint across public and self-hosted providers, while virtual keys help protect provider credentials. Organizations can also monitor token spending, apply rate limits and budget controls, and use failover capabilities while maintaining flexibility in their choice of models.

AI Firewall focuses on protecting AI-powered applications from threats such as prompt injection. By evaluating prompts within the request path, the capability is designed to identify and block potentially malicious activity before it reaches targeted models.

Meanwhile, API Security provides controls for AI agents accessing enterprise APIs. It can enforce API contracts and allow organizations to observe or block requests that do not conform to established rules, helping limit unsupported operations and malformed requests.

Bringing AI Security To The Edge

Fastly says these capabilities build on existing platform offerings including Bot Management, ContentGuard, DDoS Protection, API Discovery, and Next-Gen WAF. Together, the company aims to provide a unified environment for managing external AI traffic, internal AI activity, and autonomous agents.

Fastly reports that its network had 622 Tbps of global edge network capacity as of June 30, 2026, and handled more than five trillion requests daily as of March 31, 2026.
