MITSUKOSHI BGC is celebrating two significant milestones this year—its third anniversary and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines—through a series of cultural experiences, workshops, shopping promotions, and traditional Japanese festivities running from July to August.
Inspired by Tanabata, Japan’s beloved Star Festival, this year’s celebration highlights the enduring friendship between Japan and the Philippines while showcasing authentic Japanese culture in the heart of Bonifacio Global City.
Since opening in 2023, MITSUKOSHI BGC has served as a destination where Japanese retail, dining, and cultural experiences meet Filipino hospitality. The mall is located within The Seasons Residences, a Japanese-inspired development by Federal Land, Nomura Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd.
Anniversary celebration kicks off with Japanese performances
The festivities officially began on July 16 with an anniversary program featuring traditional and contemporary performances.
Guests were welcomed with an energetic taiko drum performance, followed by a lively Mikoshi procession, where performers carried a portable shrine in celebration of community and good fortune.
The celebration also featured a special performance by LIV Dance Academy, the first Japanese-owned dance studio in Bonifacio Global City.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of Mitsuko, MITSUKOSHI BGC’s signature Kokeshi doll mascot, dressed in a new outfit inspired by the colors of the Japanese and Philippine flags to commemorate the shared milestone.
Experience Japanese traditions
Throughout the celebration, visitors can participate in a variety of cultural activities inspired by Japan.
One of the highlights is the return of the Maguro Cutting Show at MITSUKOSHI FRESH, where third-generation Japanese fish dealer Kosuke Nakaoka demonstrates the traditional art of carving a whole tuna flown directly from Japan.
Guests are also invited to take part in the Tanabata tradition by writing wishes on colorful tanzaku cards and hanging them on bamboo trees placed throughout the mall.
Every Saturday from July 18 to August 15, eligible shoppers can enjoy the Yukata Dressing Experience, which includes a complete yukata fitting, hairstyling, and light makeup for an immersive cultural experience.
Workshops celebrate Japanese and Filipino craftsmanship
The anniversary celebration also features interactive workshops designed to showcase creativity from both cultures.
On August 29, Co. Collectibles will host the Summer Paper Theater Activity, where participants can assemble Japanese papercraft kits inspired by seasonal themes.
The following day, Pottery Sessions will present Ceramic Wishes: A Tanabata Pottery Experience, allowing guests to decorate ceramic pieces with Japanese and Filipino-inspired designs or try pottery wheel throwing.
Throughout August, shoppers can also explore curated pop-up stores featuring handcrafted products. EDYA1929 will showcase fashion pieces created from vintage Japanese kimonos and obi belts, while Frankie General Store highlights garments made from woven Philippine textiles.
Shopping rewards and raffle prizes
Visitors can also participate in the JCB Tama-nage Game Activation by presenting a minimum ₱2,500 single-receipt purchase.
Participants will have the opportunity to play the traditional Japanese-inspired ball toss game for a chance to win exclusive merchandise and instant prizes. Existing JCB cardholders receive an additional game turn, while newly approved JCB customers are entitled to a complimentary game pass.
Qualified participants will also earn entries to the grand raffle, with prizes including a Sony PlayStation 5 Slim Console, Nintendo Switch 2, and Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Leather Kits.
Bringing Japan closer to Filipinos
The celebration also highlights The Seasons Residences, a Japanese-inspired residential development directly connected to MITSUKOSHI BGC.
Designed with Japanese-inspired living principles, the development offers residents convenient access to authentic Japanese shopping, dining, and cultural experiences, reinforcing MITSUKOSHI BGC’s vision of bringing the best of Japan to everyday life in Metro Manila.
