Filipino ballet enthusiasts will once again have the opportunity to witness two of the world’s most acclaimed ballet artists as Mariinsky Ballet principal dancers Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim return to the Philippines for Ballet Manila’s production of La Bayadère this August.

The internationally celebrated dancers will headline the performances at Aliw Theater on August 14 at 8 p.m., followed by shows on August 15 and 16 at 5 p.m.

Their return follows the successful staging of Don Quixote with Ballet Manila last year, reinforcing the company’s commitment to bringing world-class ballet performances to local audiences.

“We are very excited to welcome Renata and Kimin back to Ballet Manila,” said Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila founder and artistic director.

“Their performances in Don Quixote were truly unforgettable, and the response from Filipino audiences was overwhelming. It was a delight to see our audiences embrace them so warmly, and I know many have been looking forward to seeing them perform here again,” she added.

Award-winning ballet stars return to Manila

Shakirova and Kim are among the Mariinsky Ballet’s most distinguished principal dancers, each earning global recognition for their artistry and technical excellence.

Shakirova, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, received the prestigious 2025 Benois de la Danse Award—often referred to as the “Ballet Oscar.” She is widely admired for her musicality, expressive performances, and commanding stage presence, making her one of the Mariinsky’s leading prima ballerinas.

Kim, meanwhile, made history as the first foreign male principal dancer in the Mariinsky Ballet. Despite beginning ballet at the age of 10, he has become internationally recognized for his athleticism and precise technique.

The pair also won Russia-Kultura TV’s Grand Ballet competition in 2016, further cementing their reputation as one of ballet’s standout partnerships.

A timeless ballet classic

Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, La Bayadère is regarded as one of classical ballet’s enduring masterpieces.

Set in ancient India, the story follows the tragic romance between temple dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor. Their love is threatened by jealousy, betrayal, and political intrigue after the High Brahmin, who also loves Nikiya, attempts to separate the couple. His plan ultimately leads to Nikiya’s death, unfolding a dramatic tale that spans both the mortal world and the afterlife.

At the Mariinsky Theatre, Kim is known for his portrayal of Solor, while Shakirova has performed both the roles of Nikiya and Gamzatti, showcasing her versatility across the ballet’s demanding lead roles.

Bringing world-class ballet closer to Filipinos

For Ballet Manila, the return of the acclaimed duo reflects its long-standing mission of making internationally renowned ballet performances accessible to Filipino audiences.

“Renata and Kim’s extensive experience with La Bayadère promises Filipino audiences a moving and authentic interpretation of Marius Petipa’s enduring masterpiece,” Elizalde said.

“We hope that by the end of the show, the audience will have a renewed love for ballet.”

La Bayadère will be staged at Aliw Theater on August 14, 15, and 16. Tickets are available through Ballet Manila and TicketWorld.
