Every year on April 22, Earth Day highlights the urgent need to protect the planet and secure a more sustainable future. As a global technology company serving over 760 million users across more than 90 countries and regions, OPPO recognizes its responsibility in shaping a more environmentally conscious digital future.

Beyond delivering innovative products and user experiences, OPPO continues to embed sustainability across its operations and innovation roadmap. The company has committed to achieving carbon neutrality across its entire operations by 2050, and is actively advancing initiatives focused on greener materials, reduced waste, and global environmental engagement.

Smarter Packaging Through “3R+1D” Green Design

To address the environmental impact of packaging waste, OPPO has implemented its **“3R+1D” principle—Reduction, Recyclability, Reusability, and Degradability—**across its product packaging strategy.

Excessive packaging remains a major environmental challenge in the consumer electronics industry. According to WWF data, approximately 405 million tons of paper and paperboard are produced annually, with packaging consuming around 3 billion trees globally, placing continued pressure on forest ecosystems.

In response, OPPO has transitioned product information materials from printed formats to digital alternatives. In 2025 alone, this shift saved approximately 110 million A4 sheets, equivalent to:

  • Around 13,000 mature trees preserved
  • Approximately 3,500 tons of carbon emissions avoided

OPPO is also reducing plastic dependency by incorporating natural biomass materials such as tea residue into packaging. By replacing 10–30% of petroleum-based plastics, the company is reducing plastic waste while repurposing agricultural by-products that would otherwise be discarded.

Tackling the Global E-Waste Challenge

Electronic waste continues to grow at alarming levels. According to the United Nations, global e-waste reached 62 million tons in 2022, increasing by approximately 2.6 million tons annually, and is projected to surpass 82 million tons by 2030.

OPPO is addressing this challenge through two key approaches: extending product lifespan and strengthening recycling systems.

  • The company continues to improve device durability to extend usage life
  • Users are encouraged to return used devices for reuse or responsible recycling
  • In 2025, OPPO sold approximately 35,300 tons of new products while recycling 1,187 tons of used devices across China and Europe

These initiatives are part of OPPO’s broader effort to build a more circular product lifecycle and reduce electronic waste impact.

Driving Community Engagement in Environmental Action

OPPO is also expanding sustainability beyond its own operations by working with global partners to encourage public participation in environmental protection.

In Kenya, OPPO partnered with the Peaceland Foundation and Impact Steps to support wildlife conservation at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Through the donation of OPPO Find X9 Series smartphones, researchers are now able to capture high-resolution images of rhino eye patterns from a distance. This enables more efficient tracking of migration, population changes, and conservation data collection.

The initiative reduces the need for heavy field equipment while improving accuracy in wildlife monitoring.

In India, OPPO collaborated with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to launch the Generation Green Initiative, mobilizing:

  • 5,000 interns
  • Over 1 million young participants
  • 469,500 volunteer hours
  • 10,339 kilograms of e-waste processed

The program not only improved e-waste management systems but also strengthened environmental awareness among young people, encouraging long-term behavioral change in sustainability practices.

A Long-Term Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

Guided by its mission “Technology for Mankind, Kindness for the World,” OPPO continues to integrate sustainability into product design, materials innovation, and global community programs.

From reducing packaging waste to advancing e-waste recycling and supporting conservation efforts worldwide, OPPO is reinforcing its commitment to building a more sustainable digital ecosystem—working together with users, partners, and communities toward a shared environmental future.
