Vision rarely makes it onto the annual health checklist — and yet we depend on our eyes more than almost any other organ. Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC) in Antipolo is looking to change that, bringing advanced ophthalmic technology and patient-centered eye care to more Filipinos.
At the center of their offerings is the Zeiss SMILE procedure — Small Incision Lenticule Extraction — a minimally invasive, flapless laser correction for nearsightedness and astigmatism. Using the Carl Zeiss VisuMax 800, the procedure takes just 10 seconds per eye, with the flapless design resulting in a biomechanically stable cornea and a lower risk of post-procedure dry eyes compared to traditional laser methods.

Before any procedure, FUMC conducts thorough pre-screening using a suite of specialized equipment. The Nidek Index RT 6100 checks for cataracts, the Nikon Optos California screens for retinopathy or optic neuropathy, and a Pentacam dry-eye test confirms corneal thickness and rules out keratoconus. Patients must be at least 18 years old to qualify.
The entire process — consultation, screening, and surgery — can be completed in a single day.
