Before the establishment of the Philippine Marketing Association (PMA), the profession was often reduced to mere selling and product distribution. “Marketing” conjured images of aggressive sales pitches and questionable tactics, rather than strategic insight and consumer empowerment. Marketing practitioners were rarely viewed as professionals contributing meaningfully to economic progress.
That perception began to change in 1954.
The Founding of the PMA: Elevating a Profession
In that pivotal year, 15 visionaries pooled their personal resources to establish the Philippine Marketing Association — a non-stock, non-profit organization guided by a clear and ambitious goal: to promote marketing as a noble profession and uphold the highest professional standards.
From the beginning, the PMA positioned itself not just as an industry association, but as a thought leader. It provided guidance to government on marketing-related issues and championed the belief that economic and social progress are deeply intertwined with a healthy free enterprise system.
These principles were embodied in the PMA Credo:
“Our country’s economic progress can best be achieved in a climate of free enterprise, and the business community is vital to economic progress.”
The PMA represented something entirely new — an organization grounded in integrity and honesty, committed to marketing as both an art and a science, and determined to elevate practitioners as true professionals. Members were expected to contribute not only to business growth but to community development, proving that profit was not the sole motivation of enterprise.
Through the decades, the PMA remained steadfast in its mission to improve the quality of life for Filipinos.
The Genesis of the Agora Awards
As the PMA approached its Silver Anniversary in the late 1970s, its leaders began searching for a flagship initiative — one that would distinguish the Association, recognize outstanding practitioners, and further professionalize the field.
In 1977, three influential members of the Long-Range Planning Committee began meeting regularly over informal dinners at the old Jade Vine Restaurant along United Nations Avenue. These pioneers were:
-
Ernesto G. Roceles (1976–77 PMA President)
-
Renato S. Esguerra (1974 PMA President)
-
Guillermo T. Garcia (1974 PMA Executive Vice President)
In those conversations, they envisioned an award that would transform the image of marketing in the country. One evening, Garcia proposed creating a recognition platform that would honor the nation’s best marketers.
That idea became The Agora Awards.
The name was symbolic. In ancient Athens, the “Agora” was the marketplace near the Acropolis — the center of commerce and civic exchange, and an early embodiment of the free enterprise system. It was a fitting metaphor for excellence in marketing.
While the concept was born in 1977, it took several years to materialize. Under the leadership of 1979 PMA President Agustin Bengzon, and with the catalytic influence of Roceles’ publication Agora: The Philippine Journal of Marketing, the vision finally came to life.
The first Agora Awards Night was held during PMA’s Silver Anniversary in 1979. The Awards Committee, co-chaired by Willie Garcia and Clarita Ordoñez, launched with three core categories:
-
Marketing Management
-
Marketing Education
-
Entrepreneurship
This structure became the foundation that guided the Awards’ evolution.
Growing with the Industry
Since 1979, the Agora Awards have honored distinguished individuals and organizations whose contributions have shaped Philippine marketing.
As the industry evolved, so did the Awards:
-
1986 – Export Marketing and Marketing Company of the Year were introduced.
-
1989 – Entrepreneurship was segmented into Small-, Medium-, and Large-Scale categories.
-
1997 – The Asia Pacific Agora Awards for Marketing Excellence was launched, reflecting PMA’s role as a founding member of the Asia Pacific Marketing Federation (1992). Notably, during the Philippine Centennial, the Agora Awards was “exported” to the region — a Filipino innovation embraced by neighboring marketing associations.
-
2003 – Advocacy Marketing was added, recognizing corporate social responsibility leadership.
-
2014 – Outstanding Achievement in Marketing Communications was introduced, first awarded to Dr. Donald Patrick L. Lim of ABS-CBN Corporation.
-
2023–2024 – New categories such as Marketing School of the Year, Marketing Agency of the Year, Sustainability Marketing, Social Enterprise, and Marketing Campaign of the Year were introduced. Marketing Communications and Marketing Education categories were further refined into Individual and Institutional recognitions.
Through every transition in media, technology, and market behavior, the Agora Awards adapted — reflecting the changing face of marketing while preserving its core values.
The 44th Agora Awards: Luster — The Glow of Greatness
Now in its 44th year, the Agora Awards remains the industry’s most enduring symbol of marketing excellence.
