With the holidays just around the corner, many Filipinos are gearing up for parties, reunions, and festive feasts. But before indulging, it pays to consider metabolism—how your body processes energy affects not only weight but overall health and well-being.

Recent surveys show more than half of Filipino adults are overweight or obese, with many showing early signs of metabolic syndrome, including high blood sugar, increased waist size, and elevated blood pressure. “While weight loss can be a welcome benefit, keeping metabolism balanced affects how our bodies function, how we feel, and how well we age,” says Dr. Luigi Gratton, Vice President of the Office of Health and Wellness and Chair of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board.

Modern life—stress, processed foods, and long hours of sitting—can throw metabolism off track. Chronic stress raises cortisol, promoting fat storage; highly processed foods impair appetite control, gut health, and insulin sensitivity; and prolonged sitting slows metabolic rate.

The good news: small, intentional changes can make a big difference. First, balance your plate with lean protein and fiber-rich, nutrient-dense foods to support blood sugar, gut health, and hormone regulation. Botanicals like polyphenols in citrus and capsicum in peppers may also aid metabolic function.

Second, keep moving. Physical activity enhances insulin sensitivity, regulates blood sugar, and maintains muscle mass. Even brief walks, dancing at a party, or taking the stairs can help.

Finally, prioritize rest and recovery. Quality sleep supports appetite regulation, energy levels, and cortisol balance. Aim for seven to nine hours, maintain a consistent sleep schedule, and limit screen time before bed.

“Metabolic health is built through consistent habits that support the body’s natural ability to function at its best,” Gratton notes. For a healthier, more energized holiday season, focus on mindful eating, staying active, and getting restorative rest.
