PLDT and Smart are partnering with the Philippine Business for Social Progress to launch the Xtrash Challenge School Partnership Program, a youth-centered campaign that promotes environmental stewardship. The initiative brings together students from Nemesio I. Yabut and Maximo Estrella Senior High Schools in Makati City for interactive learning sessions on responsible waste management and disaster preparedness. Recycling bins were handed over during PLDT and Smart’s EHS Week celebration, reinforcing lessons on sustainable habits and collective action for a climate-resilient future.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering communities, especially the youth, with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their environment and safety,” said Kristine G. Gonzalez-Catague, Head of Environment, Health, and Safety at PLDT and Smart. “By fostering good habits and character through programs like the Xtrash Challenge, we are investing in the next generation of climate champions who will build a healthier and more sustainable Philippines.”

Michael Lorenzana, Principal at Maximo Estrella Senior High School, said, “Our partnership with PBSP’s X-Trash Program with Smart and PLDT is a manifestation of our commitment to proper waste management, love, and concern for the planet. Students, teachers, and other school community members must seriously consider everyone’s significant role in ensuring our environment and its resources will continue to be experienced by future generations of Filipino learners.”

Fernan Placino, Assistant Principal II for Nemesio I. Yabut Senior High School, said, “The planet is getting warmer, storms are stronger, and floods are worse. It only rains a bit, and there’s an instant swimming pool. We shouldn’t just be academics but also be climate-aware. When it comes to disaster preparedness, remember, it’s not just about doing “Duck, Cover, and Hold” drills; it’s about knowing how to protect yourselves and your community because one day, you might be the one to lead others to safety.”

The Xtrash Challenge School Partnership Program underscores PLDT and Smart’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. By fostering environmental awareness and responsible waste management among youth, the Group contributes to national climate resilience and sustainability efforts. This initiative reflects PLDT and Smart’s ongoing dedication to integrating environmental stewardship into its business practices, while empowering communities to take proactive roles in protecting the planet.
