PLDT Inc. and its wireless arm, Smart Communications, Inc., have been testing next-generation tech, offering future innovators a glimpse into the telco industry’s advancements. Over 200 students from various universities visited PLDT and Smart Technolab in the first quarter of the year, including Bulacan State University Meneses campus, University of San Agustin, and De La Salle University in Manila, to learn about breakthrough technologies and reality proofs of concept.

“It was an interesting experience,” said Jaina Mae Jumaquio, a fourth-year student at BulSU. “We were able to learn about the different uses of the devices that we only see installed at cell towers. Our exposure to these technologies will help us prepare for our future work.”

Her classmate, Louisse Angelo Sapaula, on the other hand, was excited to learn about smart homes. “I was most excited about the different applications of the ‘Internet of Things, ’ especially in homes. It gives us the capability to monitor and activate devices remotely.”

“The PLDT and Smart Technolab plays a critical role in helping the PLDT Group decide which upcoming technologies to pursue. It allows us to explore digital innovations that are not yet available commercially and see how they could enhance customer experience,” said Radames B. Zalameda, Smart Head of Wireless Network Strategy and Architecture. “These opportunities to meet with next-generation leaders is the best part of this project. We hope they’ll explore careers in telco in the future.”

BULSU TECHNOLAB 4 PLDT and Smart Technolab: Where Disruption Helps Improve Experience

Strategically located in Makati, the PLDT and Smart Technolab is operated by the PLDT Group’s Network Strategy and Transformation Office (NSTO). Among the advanced solutions being explored in the sandbox are Open Radio Access Network (ORAN), transport network disaggregation, new FWA technologies, Non-Terrestrial Networks, extended reality, and advancements in cloudification and home automation solutions. These initiatives align with the PLDT Group’s ongoing digital transformation strategy, ensuring its network remains at the forefront of providing the best customer experience.

The Technolab stands as a testament to the Group’s dedication to solidifying its leadership in the digital landscape, and to delivering seamless connectivity to customers.

PLDT and Smart’s efforts to welcome students to the Technolab are aligned with the PLDT Group’s much broader program to promote meaningful innovation and inclusive, quality education. These are also aimed at helping the country achieve UNSDG 4 on Quality Education and UNSDG 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
